John Pickering (sen) and Elizabeth

John Pickering (senior) was born in 1596 in Hackness, Yorkshire, England to parents William Pickrin 1578-1638 and Alice Redshaw.

John was baptised at the parish church of St Peters, Hackness on 11 December 1596.

John married Elizabeth, surname unknown around 1627 and they had seven children together –

  1. John b 1628 d 1722
  2. Thomas b 1630 d 1673
  3. Mary b 1632 d 1665
  4. Elicia b 1633
  5. Hannah  b 1634
  6. Elizabeth b 1634
  7. Margaret b 1635 d 1738 Rokeby. Married Christopher Lightfoote. 5 children.
  8. William b 1636. Married Mercie Craven in 1674.

The marriage register entry dated 14 July 1657 in Hackness for Margaret, daughter of John and Elizabeth reads –

Christopher Leightfoote of Silfoe wheelright and Margarett Pickeringe
the daughter of Elizabeth Pickeringe of Bickley within the
Parish of Ebberston widdow were published the first tyme the
Fowerteenth day of June ye second tyme upon the xxijth day.

Christopher Leightfoote was a widower (of Mercie) and had nine children, most dying as babies.

John  died in November 1657 at Bickley. He was buried at St Peters Hackness on 28 November 1657.

There is a probate administration index file for a John Pickering, Harwood Dale who died in 1657.

NOTE – there is another John Pickering of Broxa, Hackness born 10 Nov 1605 married 24 Nov 1629 Mercy Cockerill. They had Mary 1631-1631, Mary 1632-1632, John 1636-1636 and Jayne 1637. John was the son of William Pickering b 1580 married 1604 Margaret Sheperd.
