His father James was the son of a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.michelledennis.com.au\/?page_id=9072\">Scottish convict<\/a>, and was born in Hobart, Tasmania and worked as a butcher mostly around the Alexandra, Victoria area.<\/p>\n<p>After the death of his father in 1890 of pneumonia, when Ernest was just 6 years old, his mother and children were left destitute with no bread winner to support them. Several articles appear in the Alexandra newspapers asking the public for help, which they gratefully accepted. The family lived at 6 McKenzie Street, Alexandra.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2379\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2379\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2379\" src=\"http:\/\/www.michelledennis.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/6-McKenzie-st-Alexandra-Mills-300x233.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"233\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.michelledennis.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/6-McKenzie-st-Alexandra-Mills-300x233.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.michelledennis.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/6-McKenzie-st-Alexandra-Mills-768x595.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.michelledennis.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/6-McKenzie-st-Alexandra-Mills.jpg 774w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-2379\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">6 McKenzie st Alexandra<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Soon after his father&#8217;s death, when he was aged 19, his sister Margarete died in childbirth with her first child, and then two years later in 1906 his brother James died aged 24, then his brother Arthur aged 27 died in 1911 of pneumonia (in Broken Hill).<\/p>\n<p>Ernest then left his family home in Alexandra to earn his living, ending up in Wonthaggi working in the Coal Mine as a miner. He started at the mine on 17 October 1913 as a brusher. A brusher was a man employed to cut or blast the roof or floor in the mine and so give more height, and also a person who gets the mineral down by blasting in the working face after it has been &#8220;holed&#8221;. A thankless task. He was assigned Coal Mine token no 588.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2374 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.michelledennis.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Eliza-Mills-196x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"196\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.michelledennis.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Eliza-Mills-196x300.jpg 196w, http:\/\/www.michelledennis.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Eliza-Mills.jpg 482w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 196px) 100vw, 196px\" \/>Somehow Ernest now aged 28, met and married 24 year old Collingwood lass, <strong>Eliza Asenath Hutton<\/strong>, a boot machinist. They were married on Saturday, 25 January 1913 at the home of her mother in Collingwood at 29 Bendigo Street.<\/p>\n<p>Unusually, a special license was\u00a0 obtained by the Archbishop of Melbourne, meaning no banns were called before the marriage at their respective churches. Witnesses to the marriage were Alfred C W Hutton (the bride&#8217;s brother) and Margaret Wilson Ferguson.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2398\" style=\"width: 212px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2398\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2398\" src=\"http:\/\/www.michelledennis.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Eliza-Hutton-202x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"202\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.michelledennis.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Eliza-Hutton-202x300.jpg 202w, http:\/\/www.michelledennis.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Eliza-Hutton-691x1024.jpg 691w, http:\/\/www.michelledennis.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Eliza-Hutton-768x1138.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.michelledennis.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Eliza-Hutton.jpg 892w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 202px) 100vw, 202px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-2398\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Eliza Hutton aged 4 in 1892<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Eliza was the daughter of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.michelledennis.com.au\/?page_id=2857\">Alfred Hutton,<\/a> who had died 10 years earlier (1862-1903), a bootmaker, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.michelledennis.com.au\/?page_id=2857\">Asenath Clara Jennings<\/a> (1863-1927).<\/p>\n<p>She was born on 20 February 1888 in Collingwood, the eldest of six children. His token number was 812.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In 1921 Ernest must have decided to try a new way of life and is living down in Cardinia on a dairy farm. Finding he couldn&#8217;t make a living here, he moved back to Wonthaggi where he sold fruit by delivering it around the town on a cart.<\/p>\n<p>He eventually saved enough to buy or rent a small fruit shop in the town in the 1930s.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2386\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2386\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2386\" src=\"http:\/\/www.michelledennis.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/75-McKenzie-Street-Wonthaggi-home-of-William-G-Mills-1939-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.michelledennis.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/75-McKenzie-Street-Wonthaggi-home-of-William-G-Mills-1939-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.michelledennis.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/75-McKenzie-Street-Wonthaggi-home-of-William-G-Mills-1939-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.michelledennis.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/75-McKenzie-Street-Wonthaggi-home-of-William-G-Mills-1939-768x576.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.michelledennis.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/75-McKenzie-Street-Wonthaggi-home-of-William-G-Mills-1939-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, http:\/\/www.michelledennis.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/75-McKenzie-Street-Wonthaggi-home-of-William-G-Mills-1939-2048x1536.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-2386\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">75 McKenzie Street Wonthaggi<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Unfortunately the fruit shop burnt down, and he was fortunate to find a job working as a road patrolman with the Wonthaggi Council until his retirement.<\/p>\n<p>Ernest died at his residence at 75 McKenzie Street, Wonthaggi on 2 January 1955 and is buried in the Wonthaggi Cemetery with no headstone.<\/p>\n<p>His wife Eliza lived for another ten years and passed away on 2 September 1965, aged 77, at the Numurkah War Memorial Hospital, while living at the home of her daughter Marie in Katunga South near Numurkah.
