Emily was the daughter of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.michelledennis.com.au\/?page_id=961\">Alfred Pike and Augusta Shambler.<\/a><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Family story has it\u00a0that Edward courted Emily via means of the Queenscliff ferry that traded between Sorrento and Queenscliff (close to Wallington where Emily lived). They were married at the Wesleyan Church, Yarra Street, Geelong on 19 October 1874.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Edward and Emily had eight children \u2013 Edward 1875, Walter 1877,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.michelledennis.com.au\/?p=545\">Maud\u00a0<\/a>1880, Hercules 1883, Newman 1886, Albert 1890, Lily 1893 and Frederick 1896.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\r\n<figure class=\"alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-565\" src=\"https:\/\/michelledennishistory.files.wordpress.com\/2018\/08\/edward-with-son-ewd-and-syd-chappel-st-ca1889.jpg?w=288&amp;h=300\" alt=\"\" \/>\r\n<div id=\"attachment_4293\" style=\"width: 199px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4293\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4293\" src=\"http:\/\/www.michelledennis.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Edward-Stows-Boot-Shop-189x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"189\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.michelledennis.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Edward-Stows-Boot-Shop-189x300.jpg 189w, http:\/\/www.michelledennis.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Edward-Stows-Boot-Shop.jpg 488w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 189px) 100vw, 189px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-4293\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Edward Stows Boot Shop<\/p><\/div>\r\n<span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Edward was a skilled craftsman, and like his father a cabinet maker. He is also listed in the trade directories as a bootmaker and French polisher, and his shop signage states he is also a mattress maker.<br \/><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"> He is credited with starting the Ezywalkin\u2019s Shoes chain of shops.<br \/><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">He called the store Ezywakin\u2019 Boots and Shoes, and the name was registered with the addition of the letter \u2018l\u2019 to become Ezywalkin Shoes by Cook and Sons and became one of the major names in the retail shoe trade in Victoria.<\/span><\/figure>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Edward and Emily lived and worked at 144 Chapel Street, Prahran from 1877 to 1892. The shop was at the corner of Green and Chapel Street in the Conway Building.<\/p>\r\n<div id=\"attachment_4294\" style=\"width: 529px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4294\" class=\" wp-image-4294\" src=\"http:\/\/www.michelledennis.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Edward-Stows-shop-in-Prahran-currently-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"519\" height=\"344\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.michelledennis.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Edward-Stows-shop-in-Prahran-currently-300x199.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.michelledennis.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Edward-Stows-shop-in-Prahran-currently-768x508.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.michelledennis.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Edward-Stows-shop-in-Prahran-currently.jpg 778w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 519px) 100vw, 519px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-4294\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Edward Stows shop in Prahran currently<\/p><\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Edward over those early years developed into a compulsive drinker and by today\u2019s standards would have been classed as an alcoholic.\u00a0 On weekends, when alcohol was not in ready supply family story has it that it was common for him to resort to drinking vinegar.<br \/><br \/>In an attempt to solve his drinking problems, he sold his shop in Prahran, and bought a 98 acre property at Boho near Violet Town in 1892 (CA 7B parish of Boho). (Lily 1893 and Frederick 1896). The move to Boho to help Edward beat the drinking problem was doomed to failure, as his drinking continued and was to be the indirect reason for his death.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>After a drinking session in the township of Violet Town in July 1897, he left for Hilly Park in his horse and cart.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>During this trip home he ran into wet weather from which he became saturated.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>On arriving home he was too drunk to go into the<\/p>\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4301 alignright\" style=\"font-size: 16px;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.michelledennis.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Edward-and-Emily-Stow-headstones-VT-cemetery-291x300.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"291\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.michelledennis.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Edward-and-Emily-Stow-headstones-VT-cemetery-291x300.jpeg 291w, http:\/\/www.michelledennis.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Edward-and-Emily-Stow-headstones-VT-cemetery.jpeg 745w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 291px) 100vw, 291px\" \/><\/p>\r\n<p>\u00a0house and change his clothing, so slept in the cart overnight.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>He contracted pneumonia, and died shortly after on 18 Jul y 1897, aged 49 years, at Boho.<\/p>\r\n<p>He was buried in the Violet Town cemetery with his wife Emily who died in 1950.<\/p>\r\n<p>His wife Emily was left to raise eight children ranging in ages from 21 to 1.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By 1874 Edward was living at Sorrento and owned a furniture store there (marriage certificate) and met Geelong girl Emily Matilda Pike.
