The village centre is on the north bank of the\u00a0River Mole almost 3 miles (4.8\u00a0km) east of\u00a0Dorking\u00a0and 3 miles (4.8\u00a0km) west of\u00a0Reigate. London is 19.5 miles (31.4\u00a0km) north of the village.<\/p>\n<p>James married Mary around 1677, but I&#8217;ve been unable to find the marriage in Betchworth, despite searching the registers. They had seven children &#8211;<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Mary b 1678 Betchworth<\/li>\n<li>James b 1679 Betchworth<\/li>\n<li>Elizabeth b 1682 &amp; d 1686 Effingham<\/li>\n<li>Richard b 1686, d 1760 Effingham<\/li>\n<li>Jane b 1688 &amp; d 1690 Effingham<\/li>\n<li>James b 1691 &amp; d 1746 Efingham, marr Ann Martyr 1723. 3 children.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.michelledennis.com.au\/?page_id=5711\"><strong>Edward<\/strong> <\/a>b 1695 Effingham, d 1760 Abinger, marr Mary Walder. 4 children.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div id=\"attachment_5716\" style=\"width: 282px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.michelledennis.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/St-Lawrence-Effingham-Surrey.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5716\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5716\" src=\"http:\/\/www.michelledennis.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/St-Lawrence-Effingham-Surrey.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"272\" height=\"185\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5716\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">St Lawrence Effingham Surrey<\/p><\/div>\n<p>It appears James farmed in the Betchworth area over the years of birth for his first two children, and then between 1679 and 1682 moved about 7 miles east to Effingham, where the remaining five were baptised.<\/p>\n<p>Mary Skilton died in August 1715 at Effingham aged 59, and was buried at St Lawrence, Effingham on 30 August 1715.<\/p>\n<p>James Skilton died in November 1727 at Effingham, Surrey aged 76 years and was buried in Effingham on 3 November 1727.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>James Skilton was born in Betchworth, Surrey in 1651, the son of Richard Skilton (1622-1693).
